TTP Communications plc has its
origins in TTP Group, which was started in 1988 by a group
of engineers and scientists seeking to revitalise the market
for contract engineering services by sharing responsibility
between client and consultant. Five of these engineers
formed the Computers and Communications (C&C) division
of TTP Group, focusing its efforts on research and
development and consultancy projects in the communications
sector. Today, all five of these engineers play a leading
role in the business and four are executive directors of TTP
Communications plc.
In 1990, the C&C division began work on GSM
wireless communications terminal core technology under a
co-development contract with British Aerospace. By 1993 it
had secured a co-development contract for GSM chipset
designs and software with one of its current partners,
Analog Devices Inc. (ADI).
By 1995 it had secured a further co-development
contract for radio chipsets with another of its current
partners, the semiconductor manufacturer Hitachi, now known
as Renesas. By 1996, a complete mobile telephone handset
using TTPCom's chipset designs and software had received
Full Type Approval (FTA). As further products began to
emerge from the C&C division, its focus began to shift
away from contract engineering and consultancy.
On 11 March 1998, TTP Group established TTPCom as
a wholly owned subsidiary and, shortly afterwards
transferred to it the relevant part of the TTP Group
business for which the C&C division had been
responsible. From then on, the business used the brand name
TTPCom. This move reflected a policy by TTP Group to allow
individual business groups to emerge as separate commercial
entities to stimulate and facilitate growth.
On 13 October 2000 TTP Communications plc was
listed on the London Stock Exchange under Information
Technology Hardware. The TTP Communications symbol is TTC.
